tunnels

Sometimes when you wake up, you are aware that you're awake. Your eyes are closed and you lay still, slightly breathing but you are completely aware that you are awake. Sometimes you recognize this immediately and just lay there, temporarily distant from the world. The nightstand, the alarm clock, the sink. Those things don't know you're awake, no one knows. Not your lover, not your friends. The light from outside creates an illuminating tunnel inside your eye lids and all you want to do is chase is. What you are really doing is following your sleepy eyeballs but you're still asleep enough to not understand this much yet. You chase and chase and follow in this endless world with no sense of direction. You wonder what's going to be at end, is there and end? Why are only 2 colors visible, black and red? Orange maybe. I know what blue is but for some reason it doesn't exist. Objects appear, blurry at first. Still black and red. You miss the endless maze you were creating the whole entire time but had no idea. You have no idea what you're capable of, just that you are capable. Other colors come and things start to form. You're understandably awake but want to go back to sleep so desperately you immediately close your eyes and wait for some trigger, a click noise like that of a light switch. Any sign that you are asleep. Any sign that is not reality and you can keep wondering what is next, knowing that nothing will ever be next. You'll be chasing that light tunnel forever and that is all the content you need. 20 minutes pass. You open your eyes much faster and just stare at the nightstand, the lamp. They know
you're awake.
